    One of the most researched mental disorders has been ADHD (Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder). Neuroimaging and other laboratory tests confirm that a person suffering from the disorder has a different brain function, and it confirms that it is a biological disorder.

Symptoms and Misunderstanding

    ADHD affects millions of children all over the world and it may continue into adulthood if undetected. Children with ADHD may show signs of hyperactivity, short attention span, and impulsive behavior. Unsuspecting parents may misunderstand the behavior of their children which might lead to extreme measures such as hurting their children.

    The most common type in which a person exhibits hyperactivity, impulsiveness, and inattention.


Parenting Strategies to Help Children with ADHD


    There is no 100℅ effective cure for ADHD. However, there are ways in which parents can help keep their children diagnosed with ADHD from misbehaving.


1. Praises and Rewards for Good Deeds

    People frequently misunderstand Children with ADHD because of their behavior. 

That’s why they are used to getting yelled at and criticized for everything they do. Here, parents need to focus more on positive deeds than on criticizing misbehaviors.


2. Be Brief and Direct

    Inattention is one symptom of ADHD. Long and wordy instructions would make confusing commands. It is better if you give short specific directions that your child with ADHD could easily follow.


3. Healthy Habits

    Because of their hyperactivity, children with ADHD seem to have more energy to spend. Provide an outlet such as physical exercises and activities that can help them burn out all of that energy positively. Also, give them healthy meals to replenish the used-up body fluids and nutrients during their activities.


4. Give Them A Checklist/Planner

    Establish a routine of activities that the child must accomplish daily. Using checklists and planners helps the child with ADHD do his daily tasks and trains him to be organized in everything he does. Setting up timers for every task makes him aware that he needs to do his tasks in the scheduled time.


5. Building Social Skills and Relationships

    Having a good bonding time with the child promotes strong and healthy relationships. If you have the space and if it is possible, you can host a playdate in your house and invite the kids in your area. This way, it will expose the child to people other than members of your household and improve his social skills.


ADHD and The Society

    People misunderstand people with ADHD and they may perceive them as troublemakers, problematic, lazy, unmotivated, and irresponsible. This is because they are struggling to remember details about the tasks given to them.


ADHD in Adults

    Diagnosed adults with ADHD might experience mixed emotions upon discovering that they have the condition. People sometimes feel relief right after being diagnosed because finally, they can understand what they are feeling. After some time, the feeling of relief might change into anger. The feeling of frustration might sink in while questioning why of all people, you had to undergo such a mental condition.


Your Emotions and Feelings are Normal

    If a specialist diagnosed you with ADHD, reassure yourself that everything that you feel is normal. Find someone to talk with about your emotions and do not be afraid to ask for help. In some places, people with ADHD gather and form support groups for everyone with the same condition. You can try to find support groups and join them. If you cannot find support groups, you can always call for professional help who specializes in ADHD.


Be Selective on Who to Tell

    Dealing with ADHD must be hard especially when you have no one to talk to about your feelings. However, you need to be selective about whom to share your condition. People who do not understand what you are feeling might misunderstand you. They may even say that you are just being dramatic. For this reason, you need to be selective and talk to people whom you know understand what you are undergoing through.
